Email block

Starting in July, I’ve been receiving daily scam emails from a cult. Even after blocking the sender, these emails keep getting moved to the Junk folder, which I still don’t want to see. I don’t want to receive these emails in any way, even if they end up in the Junk folder. Is there a way to completely block the sender?

To completely block a sender in Outlook and prevent their emails from appearing in your Junk folder, you can use mail flow rules (also known as transport rules) set up by an admin. This will ensure that any emails from the blocked sender are deleted upon arrival, rather than being delivered to your Junk folder.

If you have the necessary permissions, you can create a rule that specifically blocks messages from this sender. Here’s how you can do it:

    1. Go to the Mail flow section in the Exchange Admin Center.
    2. Create a new rule and specify the sender's email address you want to block.
    3. Set the action to Delete the message.

This way, any future emails from the cult will not reach your inbox or Junk folder at all.

If you do not have admin access, you may need to contact your IT department or the person responsible for managing your email settings to implement this rule for you.

    Hi Hyunmin Kim

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum! Have a good day and I hope you're doing well!

I completely understand and share your frustration with continuously receiving scam emails from this cult group over the past period. I will guide you on how to set up a server-side rule to completely block them, ensuring these emails no longer appear in any folder, including Junk.

Below is a detailed guide to creating a server-side rule in Outlook. This rule will run directly on the server, allowing permanent deletion of matching emails without manual intervention.

    1. Open the Outlook application on your computer.

    2. Go to Settings > Rules. You will see the Server rules tab.

    3. Select the correct email account that is affected (if you have multiple accounts).

    4. Click the New Rule button (or the + sign if available).

    5. Set the rule name: Block cult – Delete forever (you can change the name if needed).

In the section When a new message arrives that meets ALL these conditions:

    1. Click + Add condition and set up:

    • From > Is > Enter the exact email address of the scam sender. Or if they use multiple addresses from the same domain, select From > Contains > Enter the domain.

    2. Click + to add another condition: Subject > Contains > Enter characteristic keywords in the email subject (e.g., the cult's name, phone number, or fixed invitation phrases like "new church" or "free Bible study").

You can add more conditions by clicking the "+" sign after each condition.

In the section Do the following:

    1. Click + Add action > Select Delete (to permanently delete, not move to Junk).

    2. Check the box for Enabled to activate the rule.

    3. Click OK to save and apply.

After applying the rule, any new matching emails will be automatically deleted at the server level, so you won't see them anymore.

Additionally, you can also create a similar server-side rule via Outlook Web App (OWA): Detailed instructions are available at: Manage email messages by using rules in Outlook

I hope this information will be helpful partially for you. If you have any concerns or questions, or if I misunderstood or anything is unclear, feel free to let me know.
