If you're experiencing issues upgrading to Windows 11 version 24H2 from a USB drive, here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot the problem:

    1. Check Compatibility: Ensure that your HP desktop meets the system requirements for Windows 11. You can verify this by checking the Windows 11 requirements.
    2. Review Event Logs: Use Event Viewer to check for any system logs that might indicate driver or hardware issues that could be causing the upgrade to fail.
    3. Update Drivers: Make sure that all your Windows and third-party drivers are up to date. You can do this through Windows Update and by checking the manufacturer's website for any specific driver updates.
    4. Check Device Manager: Open Device Manager and look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark, indicating driver errors. Resolve any issues found there.
    5. BIOS Update: Ensure that your BIOS and firmware are up to date. Check the HP website for any updates available for your model.
    6. Clean Boot: Perform a clean boot to eliminate any background applications that might interfere with the installation. This can be done by using the System Configuration tool (msconfig) to disable all non-Microsoft services and startup items.
    7. Remove External Devices: Disconnect all non-essential external hardware, leaving only the mouse, keyboard, and display connected.
    8. Reinstall Using Different Media: If the issue persists, consider creating a new installation media using the Media Creation Tool from Microsoft, ensuring that it includes the latest updates.
    9. Check for Safeguard Holds: There may be a compatibility hold on your device. You can check for this using the safeguard ID provided in Windows Update for Business reports.

If you continue to face issues, you may want to contact Microsoft support for further assistance.

    Good morning Donal Mc Nulty,

Regarding your issue, the upgrade failure is commonly caused by using outdated or corrupted installation media from a retail USB. Hence, you need to discard that USB and create a new bootable drive with the current Windows 11 24H2 image using the official Microsoft Media Creation Tool. Before reinstalling, remember to ensure your C drive has at least 20GB of free space and disable all third-party antivirus or security software.

If the problem continues, update your HP desktop's BIOS and chipset drivers directly from HP's support website, as incompatible drivers can disrupt the installation process.

I hope you are clear with the information. Should you have any more questions, feel free to leave a message. It's really appreciated of you to accept the answer to help build the community by sharing your experience with the issue. Thanks!
