Hi everyone,

I’ve noticed that the Remote Desktop App has been discontinued and replaced with the new “Windows App”, which unfortunately does not support standard Remote Desktop (RDP) connections anymore.

Our internal application depends on RDP, so the new Windows App doesn’t work for our setup. Normal RDP via mstsc.exe also isn’t a viable solution for us due to some specific application requirements.

Does anyone happen to have a download link or installer for the previous Remote Desktop App (version 10.2.4012.0 or newer)? I can’t seem to find it on the Microsoft Store anymore.

Any help or mirror link would be greatly appreciated!

Also, as a home user the new Windows App will not work for me as I have neither a Work or School account.

Hello Inge. Unfortunately, older RD app versions (such as 10.2.4012.0) are no longer available through the Microsoft Store or official Microsoft download channels.

That said, if your environment still relies on standard RDP connections, you can continue using mstsc.exe (the built-in Remote Desktop Connection client) or consider deploying Remote Desktop Web Client or Azure Virtual Desktop for similar functionality, depending on your infrastructure. For enterprise use cases, these options typically provide better long-term support and update compatibility.

I’d recommend avoiding third-party mirror links, as they may pose security and compliance risks.

I do have a laptop with the old Remote Desktop app installed, and I’m able to connect to remote desktops through our VPN solution without any issues. However, when I try to use mstsc.exe, I get an error message that the Remote Desktop app seems to “ignore.”

From my understanding, the Remote Desktop app doesn’t have the same NLA requirements as mstsc.exe, which is why it still works. About two years ago, mstsc.exe was our main tool for connecting to remote computers, but after some Windows updates, this error message started appearing more frequently.

As a workaround, we discovered that the Remote Desktop app continued to work while mstsc.exe did not.

I’m hoping someone might still have the installation file for the old Remote Desktop app. Even though customer support for it is no longer active, we would still like to have the program, as we don’t need any support — just the application itself.
