Based on your description, could you kindly confirm that you are having a problem with Teams as you can't chat with your friends there using your educational account? Please let me know if my understanding of your request is correct.
To understand the situation better and provide you with the most suitable support, could you confirm the following information:
- Are you using a personal account (e.g. @outlook.com, @hotmail.com) or a work/school account (e.g. @company.com, @edu)? If you are using an educational account, have other users/friends in the same organization reported the same issue?
- What version of Teams are you using? You could check it by clicking on your profile picture on Teams for mobile (iOS) > Settings > About
- Are you trying to chat with people inside your organization or external contacts?
- Do you see any error messages when you try to start a chat? If there is, could you provide the full text or a screenshot of the error message so I could have a visual reference and more information on it?

In the meantime, kindly try the following suggestions to check what might have caused the issue:
- Test chat functionality
- Try chatting with someone inside your organization first, then try with someone from outside your organization

- Update Teams to the latest version
