Just upgraded from Office 365 Personal to Family. Was charged the full amount and not the difference

Just upgraded from Office 365 Personal to Family. Was charged the full amount and not the difference. On March 27th I paid £84.99 for the Office 365 Personal. Today 2nd October 2025 I upgraded to Office 365 Family and paid £104.99. I thought I should only pay the difference which is £20?

I was going to upgrade from 365 Family to 365 Premium - taking advantage of the 50% off the first year promotion which gives you the first year of the 365 Premium subscription for just $99. When I went to upgrade I was told I'd be billed $108 - $99 + taxes - and it seemed that my existing 365 Family plan was not taken into account. I'd renewed the Family plan for $129 just 7 days earlier and had 358 day remaining. This remaining plan just seemed to disappear.

The blurb about upgrading was grossly misleading if Microsoft are just going to extend your subscription term. I ended up canceling the upgrade because it seemed like a rip off and I was losing the value of my current 365 Family subscription. Microsoft really need to clarify this better in the description of the upgrades because it really is misleading.

About your question regarding the upgrade from Office 365 Personal to Family, when you upgrade, Microsoft doesn’t charge just the difference. Instead, the full amount for the new plan is billed, and a portion of your remaining time from the previous subscription is automatically converted and added to your new plan.
