How to make Windows Explorer show all results

This seems to be new in Windows 11, at least this is the first time I noticed it. I was searching in Windows Explorer for something I knew I should find but it wasn't showing in the results. I searched a few different ways until I found what I was looking for. I tried my original search again and same results; what I was searching for was missing. I was dumbfounded because I knew it was there. After looking more carefully, it seems like Windows 11 changed the search results and added a "(Show All XX)" link.

Can someone please tell me what is happening with UI design nowadays? How in the world did this feature get approved and developed. This makes absolutely no sense. Please tell me there is a setting somewhere to disable this and show all the results by default again?

Hi! mjremijan. Thanks for the details.

Starting with Windows 11 (23H2 and newer), File Explorer search now shows a limited “preview” of results by default, usually the top 20–50 matches, and then adds a “(Show all XX)” link at the bottom (like in your screenshot).

This is a deliberate UI change meant to:

Make the search panel load faster by not rendering hundreds of results at once.

Push users toward using the new Search in Home or Windows Search indexer instead of the classic Explorer search.

Unify search behavior between File Explorer, Start Menu, and Settings.

Unfortunately… there’s currently no built-in option or setting in Windows 11 to always show all results by default.

    Best regards,

    Kimberly
