Why is the Gmail app saying that my Microsoft account doesn't exist?

I am trying to link my Microsoft account to the Gmail app on my phone. Whenever I select the Outlook, Hotmail, and Live option and type in my email, I get a message saying that my account doesn't exist. Whenever I select the Office365 option, I get a message saying that my username or password is incorrect. Could this have anything to do with the fact that this is a school provided email? How can I troubleshoot this so I can add my Microsoft email to the Gmail app?

    Dear @Washington, Vivianna

Thank you for posting your question in the Microsoft Q&A forum. I understand you're encountering issues when trying to add your Microsoft school-provided email to the Gmail app on iOS.

To better understand and solve the problem you are facing, could you help me with the following?

    • Are you able to log in to your Microsoft account on a different device (like a computer)?
    • Have there been any changes made to your school account settings recently?
    • What specific device and operating system are you using for the Gmail app?

Based on recent testing, we’ve observed that on Android devices, signing in with a school-provided Microsoft account typically works when selecting Exchange and Office 365 as the account type.

However, this sign-in method currently appears to be disabled or unsupported on iOS, which may explain the issue you're experiencing.

For detailed instructions, you can refer to the official Microsoft support article: Set up email in Android email app

In the meantime, here are a couple of options depending on what you want to do:

    1. Account Type Selection

    • If your email is provided by a school or organization, it is likely a Microsoft 365 (Work or School) account.
    • Please ensure you're selecting Office365 (not Outlook/Hotmail/Live) when adding the account in Gmail.

    2. "Account Doesn't Exist" Error

    • This may occur if the account is not recognized as a personal Microsoft account. School accounts are managed by your institution and may require specific configurations.
    • If you see this error, try signing in at https://portal.office.com to confirm the account is active.

    3. "Incorrect Username or Password" Error

    • If you're sure the credentials are correct, your school may require additional security settings or app passwords
    • Please contact your school’s IT administrator to confirm:
      • Whether IMAP/SMTP access is enabled.
        • If multi-factor authentication (MFA) or conditional access policies are in place.

    4. Troubleshooting Steps

Confirm with your IT admin that your account is active and properly configured for third-party email apps.

If the issue persists, consider using the Outlook mobile app, which is optimized for Microsoft 365 accounts.

Please let me know if you need further assistance.
