I am writing to report a persistent issue I’ve been experiencing with OneNote since migrating to OneNote 365. The application frequently lags, becomes unresponsive, and occasionally crashes during routine use. This has significantly impacted my productivity, especially when working with larger notebooks or switching between sections.

Prior to the upgrade, OneNote was functioning smoothly. The current performance issues seem to have surfaced only after the transition to OneNote 365. I have already attempted basic troubleshooting steps such as restarting the application, clearing cache, and updating to the latest version and Windows Recovery, but the problem persists.

Could you please advise on any known fixes or further steps I can take to resolve this? If needed, I’m happy to provide system details or logs to assist with diagnosis.

1.Could you clarify which specific activity notifications you’re still seeing and would prefer not to receive?

2.Do other users experience the same issue?

3.Have you try to open OneNote file on a difference devices?

4.Have you noticed lagging or unresponsiveness with specific notebooks or sections, especially large ones? Or is it happen to all file?

5.Have you tried OneNote on the web?

6.Do you use any add-ins or plugins with OneNote?

7.Check if you have the battery options try put it in maximum performance?

Click the File tab.

Click on Options and then click on Advanced tab.

I’m reaching out regarding persistent lagging and unresponsiveness in OneNote. I’ve answered the questions below to help you better understand the issue:

Activity Causing Lag: Whenever I switch between pens or scroll through a page, OneNote frequently becomes unresponsive. This issue did not occur when I used OneNote for Windows 10. I’m currently using a Microsoft Surface Pro 7 and have an active OneDrive subscription.

Other Users Affected: Yes, all faculty members at my college are experiencing the same issue.

Tried on Other Devices: I’ve tested the same OneNote files on different devices, but the problem persists.

Specific Files or Sections: The lag appears across all notebooks and sections, not just large files.

Web Version: I’ve also tried using OneNote on the web, but the issue remains.

Add-ins or Plugins: I do not use any add-ins or plugins with OneNote.

Battery Settings: I’ve already set the battery performance to maximum, but it hasn’t resolved the issue.

If possible, then prepare OneNote like OneNote for Windows 10 (Application).

To resolve this, Microsoft’s support team will need to step in. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis.

I carefully followed the suggested steps, including testing on other devices, switching battery settings to maximum performance, and trying the web version of OneNote. Unfortunately, the problem persists.

Additionally, I had a remote support session with your team on my Surface Pro 7, but the issue could not be resolved during that session either. My case number for reference is 7086930459.

Summary of the Issue:

OneNote frequently becomes unresponsive when switching between pen tools or scrolling through pages.

This issue affects all notebooks and sections, regardless of size.

It occurs across devices and even in the web version.

No add-ins or plugins are in use.

Battery settings have been optimized for performance.

The problem did not exist when using OneNote for Windows 10 (Application).

I have also responded to the diagnostic questions shared by your moderator on the Q&A forum, and I’ve attached screenshots for reference.

However, if the issue remains unresolved, you may also try the step by step I’ve suggested below:

Run OneNote as an administrator

Some users reported running OneNote as an administrator and the lag disappeared. You should also try this. Follow the steps provided below to run OneNote as an administrator.

Type the OneNote on the start menu.

Right-click on OneNote.

Click on Run as administrator.

Change graphics card settings for OneNote

Type the Graphics settings on the start menu.

Select the Graphics settings.

Select the Desktop app and click on the Browse button to add OneNote.

After adding OneNote, click on the Options button. The pop-up will appear and it will show you these three options:

Let Windows decide

Power saving

High performance

OneNote is located at the following location on your C drive;

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\root\Office16

The Office16 in the above path may be different for you depending on the version of Microsoft Office installed on your system. Change graphics card settings for OneNote

Disable Automatic Sync

If your Automatic Sync is enabled, disable it and see if it works.
