Unable to Join Teams Breakout Rooms Via Mobile (Android or IOS)

  1. Users on mobile cannot join the breakouts because the rooms don't show up on the mobile apps (IOS or Android)
  2. Co-Organizers don't show up when attempting to manually assign mobile users to breakouts
    1. Work around remove the users from the organizer role then assign to the room
  3. Frequently when a user joins a room it shows them as on hold in the main room instead of having left the lobby/main room.

    Hi @Reese, Regan J

Good day! Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A forum.

I'm really sorry about inconvenience you're experiencing.

Regarding your issue, please note that Breakout Rooms have some known limitations:

    • Mobile users cannot manage breakout rooms - only join.
    • Co-organizers cannot pre-assign participants before the meeting starts.
    • External users or those on free Teams accounts may not be assignable.

Here're suggestions you try to fix it:

    1. Update Teams App

    • Mobile users must be on the latest version of the Teams app.
    • Outdated apps often fail to reflect breakout room assignments.

    2. Use supported meeting types

    • Breakout rooms only work in:
      • Scheduled private meetings
      • Meet Now meetings
      • Scheduled channel meetings
    • They do not work in shared channels or meetings organized by external users.

    3. Assign via Desktop

    • If possible, assign mobile users to breakout rooms using the desktop client.
    • Then prompt them to rejoin the meeting from mobile.

    4. Use “Ask to Join” option

    • If a user fails to join a room, hover over their name in the breakout room panel and select “Ask to join”. This may prompt the user to join the breakout room.

Please let me know if there’s anything else I can assist you with. I’m here to support you every step of the way.

Thank you for your patience and understanding.

    Hi @Reese, Regan J

Thanks so much for the detailed response.

    You're absolutely right:

    • If the user is a co-organizer, they currently cannot be manually assigned to breakout rooms unless you first remove them from that role. This is a known limitation in Teams.
    • The “Ask to Join” option not appearing is also something we’ve seen intermittently, especially with mobile users or when breakout rooms are created after the meeting starts.

Since you've already tried updating the app and using supported meeting types, here are some suggestions that might help you:

    1. Rejoin from Desktop first

    • Have the mobile user join from a desktop client first, get assigned to a breakout room, then switch back to mobile. This sometimes helps sync the room assignment.

    2. Avoid Co-Organizer role for mobile participants

    • If breakout room participation is critical, consider assigning mobile users as attendees rather than co-organizers during setup.

    3. Use pre-assignment before the meeting starts

    • If possible, pre-assign participants before the meeting begins using the desktop Teams client. This can improve reliability, especially for mobile users.

We truly appreciate your time and cooperation throughout the resolution of this matter. Thank you for being a valued customer and for contacting us on the Microsoft Q&A forum.

If you need any other assistance, please don’t hesitate to reach out again and I would be happy to help you.
