Hello Kunal Sethi
Welcome to Microsoft Q&A Forum
Thank you for sharing the issue. I understand that when you try to upload screenshots or images to OneNote, they either fail with the error “can’t add content to OneNote, please pick a different location” or only show as icons. Please kindly try the following steps to resolve this:
- Test a different notebook:
- Try inserting the image into another section or notebook.
- If it works there, the problem may be with that specific notebook (permissions or sync issue)
- Check OneNote app permissions:
- On your Android device: Settings > Apps > OneNote > Permissions.
- Make sure Files and Media (Storage) permission is enabled
- Reinstall the OneNote app:
- Uninstall OneNote completely.
- Restart your device, then reinstall from the Google Play Store
- This refreshes corrupted app files and clears cached errors.
- Insert using Camera → Gallery workaround:
- In OneNote, tap Insert > Camera
- When the camera opens, switch to your photo gallery and pick the image.
- This method often bypasses the error.
- Use Screenshot toolbar to share directly:
- On some Android devices, take a screenshot and tap Edit > Share > OneNote.
- This can successfully insert the screenshot inline.
Recommendation:
- Start by checking permissions and testing a different notebook. If that doesn’t help, reinstall the app, then use the camera/gallery insert or screenshot share as a workaround.
