Has anyone successfully got gmail connected via POP to Classic Outlook?

I've enabled POP in my gmail account (gmail settings confirm this). Previously I just forwarded gmail to my Outlook client (I've turned off forwarding now). So I'm trying to get gmail picked up in Outlook so I can save it in my .PST files. But every time I try to add my gmail account (manually, selecting POP), I get the error message 'We couldn't log on to the incoming (POP) server.....' I've rebooted / restarted everything, etc. Any ideas?

    Hello!

I'm Yasllame, a member of the OnDemand Expert community.

I'm happy to help and clarify any questions.

To connect Gmail via POP in Outlook, you first need to make sure POP is enabled in your Gmail account. Go to Gmail settings, then Forwarding and POP/IMAP, and check that POP is turned on for all mail or for new mail from now on. Don’t forget to save your changes.

When setting up the account manually in Outlook, the incoming mail server should be pop.gmail.com with port 995 and SSL/TLS enabled. The outgoing mail server should besmpt.gmail.com, using either port 465 with SSL or 587 with TLS. In the Outlook account settings, you also need to enable “My outgoing server requires authentication” and select the option to use the same credentials as your incoming mail.

Since May 30, 2022, Google no longer allows Outlook or similar apps to log in using your regular Gmail password. Instead, if you have two-step verification enabled, you must generate what Google calls an App Password. To do this, go to your Google Account Security page, activate 2-Step Verification if you haven’t already, then open the App Passwords section. Choose Mail and Windows Computer, and Google will generate a 16-character password. That special password is what you enter in Outlook instead of your usual Gmail password.

If you don’t use 2-Step Verification, the old “allow less secure apps” option is no longer available, so the only way to connect Outlook is by enabling 2FA and creating an App Password.

Sometimes Outlook logins fail because Google flags the attempt as suspicious. In that case, go to the Google Security Checkup page, look for any blocked sign-in attempts, and approve them so Outlook can connect successfully.

In short, the error you are seeing usually happens because Outlook is still trying to sign in with your normal Gmail password. The solution is to enable 2-Step Verification in Gmail and then use an App Password for Outlook.
I hope this information was helpful! If you need anything else, I'm here.

    Sincerely,

    Yasllame
