Hello Bob. If Outlook for Mac crashes upon startup, the cause is most likely a corruption in the preferences, the software is out of date, or an add-in is interfering with Outlook. To solve the issue first restart both Outlook and macOS to rule out any temporary glitches. Second, check for updates in Outlook and macOS.
To do that, go to the ribbon at the top of Outlook and choose Outlook > Help > Check for Updates. Then go to macOS System Preferences and choose System Settings > General > Software Update. If the Outlook issue persists, start Outlook in Safe Mode by pushing down the Option key while clicking the Outlook icon. This will disable add-ins and your custom settings. If Outlook starts and runs correctly; disable all your add-ins using Tools > Manage Add-ins, and then individually re-enable each add-in until you can identify the interfering add-in. Another option for modification includes deleting Outlook preference files.
On the Mac, the preference files are stored in ~/Library/Preferences/. Move the Outlook files there that start with com.microsoft.Outlook to a backup folder. If Outlook crashes right after startup, you can also use the Microsoft Database Utility and rebuild your Outlook database. The icon is located under Applications > Microsoft Outlook.
