OneDrive overwrite picture date taken with the upload dates

Hi, I'm using OneDrive to back up photos from my mobile device, and I've noticed that it overwrites certain file information during the upload process. Specifically, the "Date taken" metadata is being changed to the date and time the photo was uploaded.

As shown in the attached image, there's a discrepancy between the actual time the photo was taken and the timestamp stored in the file. In this example, the difference is just a few minutes, but for some other photos, the filename and the "date taken" value differ by over a day.

Is Microsoft aware of this issue?

Thanks for any feedback

Best Regards

Corrado

    Hello Corrado,

Thank you for reaching out to Microsoft Community, Regarding on you issue/concern "OneDrive overwrite picture date taken with the upload dates" Yes, Microsoft is aware of the issue where OneDrive overwrites the "Date taken" metadata with the upload date, especially when using the mobile app for photo backup.

OneDrive Mobile App (especially on Android) often replaces the original EXIF "Date Taken" with the file system's "Date Modified" or the upload timestamp.

    This is more common when:

    Uploading in bulk

    Using Camera Upload feature

Uploading from apps like WhatsApp or Signal (which may strip metadata)

    Recommended Method:

Use OneDrive Desktop App on your PC or Mac.

Connect your phone via USB or use an SD card adapter.

Manually copy photos to a local folder synced with OneDrive (e.g., Pictures > Mobile Backup).

This preserves the original EXIF metadata, including "Date Taken"

    and Avoid:

Using OneDrive Mobile App for backing up existing photo archives.

Relying on Camera Upload for metadata-sensitive files.
