Onedrive rewrites version history

Onedrive is "rewriting history": it replaces the older versions of Word files with newer ones (rather than keeping the original version intact). Thus, as I make a change to the file, these changes are reflected in all previous versions of that file. As far as I know, my institution does enable version history, and the same problem is noted on multiple distinct files. I would be grateful for your advice. thanks!

    The local Office admin may have limited the number of historic versions that are preserved. This may explain why file versions are regularly lost.
