How can I restore a Channel/Team in MS Teams?

One day I created a channel in MS Teams and it worked fine, I wanted to view it in OneDrive and attached the shortcut to "My Files" for quick access, then one day I turned on my computer and I had a notification of a sync error in OneDrive and I could no longer access it, there was a message that said the following "The shortcut has been deleted or you no longer have the permissions" which seems strange to me because I am the owner.

I have very important information for my daily activities without a previous backup, how can I recover it and prevent it from happening again?

    Hello,

You need to contact your organization IT. They can log into Teams Admin Center to restore for you.

    Dear Gonzalez_Luis,

Good day! Thank you for posting in Microsoft Community.

Based on your description, I understand you're experiencing issues accessing a Microsoft Teams channel via a OneDrive shortcut, receiving a message stating, "The shortcut has been deleted, or you no longer have the permissions." Given the importance of the information contained within this channel, let's explore steps to restore access and prevent future occurrences.

Microsoft Teams allows channel recovery within 30 days of deletion.

    Restore your Deleted Channel:

    • Open Microsoft Teams and go to the Team where the channel was created.
    • Click on the three dots (...) next to the Team name and select Manage team.
    • Go to the Channels tab and check if the missing channel is listed under Deleted.
    • If you find it, click Restore.

    For reference: restore a channel

    Restore Files from SharePoint:

Since Teams files are stored in SharePoint, you can try restoring them:

    • Open SharePoint by going to office.com > SharePoint.
    • Find the Team site associated with your deleted channel.
    • Click Recycle Bin on the left panel and look for the missing files.
    • Select the files and click Restore.

If files aren’t in the first recycle bin:

    • Select your Team’s site > Recycle Bin > Second-stage recycle bin.

For reference: recover files in Microsoft Teams

    Fix OneDrive Sync Issues:

    • In OneDrive, right-click the errored shortcut > Remove sync.
    • Go back to your channel’s Files tab in Teams > Click Sync to relink it to OneDrive.

For reference go through the article: Fix OneDrive sync problems

However, we can work together to narrow down and resolve the situation. So, please kindly provide more information below to let us work further.

    • What exact error message do you see in OneDrive?
    • Did anyone modify permissions, retention policies, or SharePoint settings recently?
    • Was the Team itself deleted or archived?

Please try these steps and let me know if you need any further clarification or assistance. I'm happy to help.

    Best Regards

    Sophia

Hi Sophia, thanks for the reply and the steps to recovery, but i cannot see the channel/team that I create there is not present on the list of team\channels.

Also, on OneDrive in teams I didn't see the tab that says "Deleted" and on the recicle bin its empty.
Also, I saw on the OneDrive on the site that the owner appears like "Owner: Name of team"

    Dear Gonzalez_Luis,

Good day! Thank you for your patience.

Since you cannot see the channel in Teams, the Deleted tab, or the files in the Recycle Bin, it is possible that:

    • The entire Team was deleted instead of just the channel.
    • retention policy or SharePoint settings might be preventing recovery.
    • The Team still exists, but your access was revoked or changed.

Ask a Global Admin or Teams Administrator to check if the Team is deleted:

    • Go to Microsoft 365 Admin Center → Teams & Groups → Deleted Groups.
    • If found, select the Team → Restore.

Reference: Restore a deleted Microsoft 365 group.

Since OneDrive shows "Owner: Name of Team", it means the Team still exists, but you might have lost access.
Try accessing the files directly in SharePoint:

    1. Go to: SharePoint → Open your Team site.
    2. Check the permissions by clicking Gear Icon (⚙️) > Site permissions.
    3. If your access is missing, ask an Admin to restore your permissions.

Reference: Manage site permissions in SharePoint.

As you already raised a support ticket, could you kindly confirm if you encountered any issues while submitting it? We want to ensure that your experience was smooth and that your request was processed correctly.

For reference, how to raise a support ticket?

    Regards,

    Sophia
