Why can't I add my phone number to my microsoft account?

When I try to add my phone number it sends me a verification code, then once I enter the code it asks me to input my account password, and once I do that it give me the error message "alias cant be added"

    Based on your description, there may be an issue with the phone number you are trying to add. Kindly try to perform these steps for us to isolate the case:

    1. Clearing the cache and cookies of your browser.

    To clear your browser cache and cookies in Microsoft Edge, go to Settings > Privacy > Clear browsing data and select Ctrl+Shift+Del. You can also type "edge://settings/clearbrowserdata" in your address bar to access this function.

    1. Disabling extensions / going incognito or in-private browsing.

    In Microsoft Edge, select Extensions located to the right of your browser address bar, then select Manage Extensions.

    Select the toggle next to the extension you want to turn off.

    1. Changing browsers. (Google Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari etc.)
    2. Disconnect from VPN or Proxy server.

    Open Settings and click/tap on the Network & Internet icon.

    Click/tap on VPN on the left side, click/tap on the connected VPN (ex: "MPN") on the right side you want to disconnect, and click/tap on the Disconnect button.

    When finished, you can close Settings.

    1. Try using a different phone number, as your current phone number may have been used on another account already. (It may have been associated and was removed from an account before.)
