    Dear comic sans ms,

Thank you for reaching out with your question about downloading Microsoft Edge on your Chromebook. I understand the need for a browser that supports extensions, and I’ll guide you through what’s possible on a Chromebook, given the restrictions you mentioned.

Chromebooks, by default, run on Chrome OS, which doesn’t support traditional Windows programs, including .exe files, like the installer for Microsoft Edge. Unfortunately, because Chrome OS is designed to run web-based applications, you can't install the Windows version of Edge or any other .exe files directly.

While you can’t run the Windows version of Edge on your Chromebook, there is an option to install the Android version of Microsoft Edge from the Google Play Store, provided your device supports Android apps. However, keep in mind that the Android version of Edge has limited functionality, including no support for browser extensions. Extensions are only available on the desktop versions of Edge (Windows or macOS). This limitation could impact your ability to use certain tools or plugins you rely on.

If browser extensions are critical to your work or daily tasks, I’d recommend using a device that runs Windows OS. Windows can run full versions of Edge (and other browsers) with support for extensions, and it also allows you to install and run a wide variety of programs, giving you the flexibility you need.

If you have the option to use or switch to a Windows machine, it would provide the full experience you're looking for with Microsoft Edge, including support for extensions and other advanced features.

If switching devices isn’t possible and using extensions is essential to your workflow, you could try using Chrome on your Chromebook, as it supports a wide range of extensions via the Chrome Web Store. However, if your Chromebook’s admin settings have restricted access, this might be a challenge as well.

I hope this helps clarify your options! Please feel free to reach out again if you need more assistance.

    Best Regards,

Martin | Microsoft Community Support Specialist
