Opening Microsoft Edge causes the mouse cursor to move randomly

On my new Windows 11 Pro PC (OS Version 10.0.26100.2894 (Win11 24H2 2024 Update)), when I open Microsoft Edge, the cursor moves randomly, and uncontrollably, around the screen for a minute or so. The clock also seems to freeze and the whole system becomes unresponsive, for example I cannot ALT-TAB between programs. When the mouse stops misbehaving, the clock restarts and jumps to the correct time. This also happens if I switch from Edge to another program, or minimise it. When I switch back, the same thing happens.

I have run a Repair on Edge but this makes no difference. I could try to force uninstall Edge but I suspect it is too closely integrated with the OS to risk this. I have also run a full virus scan.

Can anyone help fix this strange behaviour? I am currently using Chrome without any problem but there are features in Edge that I quite like and it is all set up the way I want.

Thanks, Stephen

    Hi, StephenElwell-Sutton

    Welcome to the Microsoft community.

Regarding performance response issues, you can visit this website and try turning off these three features.

    edge://settings/system

I also suggest checking your extensions and temporarily disabling all of them to see if the issue persists. If the problem continues, it might be a compatibility issue with a specific Edge version. You can try using the Canary version of Edge to see if the issue occurs there. Additionally, please report your issue to the Edge developers using Alt+Shift+I, including your CPU and GPU models.

    Best regards

Many thanks for your suggestions. Disabling all extensions and turning off those two features (Startup Boost was already off) makes no discernible difference. The problem does not seem quite so bad today; the freeze is only five or ten seconds. I will keep tracking it. I have reported the feedback as you suggest.

Microsoft Edge Canary seems to work fine; it does not display the same problem. The only downside is that, as it is a beta build, I cannot set it as the default browser, so this limits its usefulness.

Do you have any further suggestions to try? What is the next step in trying to resolve this?

    Thanks, Stephen

Looks like I spoke too soon. Canary Edge is now displaying the same symptoms - the mouse slows down for an indeterminate time. Currently, it only seems to be five or ten seconds, but it keeps happening and makes some actions impossible.

I have been having the exact same problem, starting at about the same time.

I removed the mouse driver, restarted the PC with the keyboard, Windows reinstalled the mouse and this resolved the problem for a few days. However, it has come back. It now happens with both Edge (consistently) and Chrome (intermittently). The mouse does not move randomly but slows down and 'staggers' across the screen. Mouse clicks are difficult. This goes on for about a minute and then stops until I do something with the browser when it happens again. Everything on the PC slows down. Keyboard presses take a second to appear, ALT-TAB takes a long time to work.

So far, it does not happen with Firefox.

On a new, reasonably high performance PC, this is extremely frustrating.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Thanks, Stephen
