Surface Studio 2 sometimes won't wake up from sleep; have to force reboot.

Hi all,

My Surface Studio 2 is almost 4 years old, and it has never had any problems until recently; where upon hitting the side power button on the screen, it doesn't wake up. A few times (over the past few months) I've had to force power it down (by holding the power button), and have it reboot. Upon reboot, it starts working just fine. It's only sporadic but it is starting to concern me.

I wonder what could be causing that. Anyone experience this, and have any recommendations for me?

Thanks in advance!

    Hi cjs33139,

    Welcome to Microsoft Community.

I'm Hahn and I'm here to help you with your concern.

Hello! I'm sorry to hear that you're experiencing issues with your Surface Studio 2. Just to make sure I understand your issue: When you press the power button, the Surface screen remains black, and it does not turn on. Is that correct?

Here are a few steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue:

    • Attach the PSU, confirm the tip is lit, and disconnect all extra peripherals from the device. If the tip doesn't light, there may be an issue with the PSU. A connected accessory or monitor may be causing the problem.
    • Wake with hot keys. Press the Windows logo key + Ctrl + Shift + B. This restarts the graphics display driver. If the device was stuck on a black screen, this may resolve the issue.
    • Force a shutdown and restart your Surface: Force a shutdown and restart your Surface - Microsoft Support

Remember that sporadic issues can be tricky to diagnose, but these steps should help you narrow down the problem. Hopefully, your Surface Studio 2 will be waking up promptly again!

    Your Sincerely

    Hi Hahn,

Thank you for the prompt response. Yes, that is correct; when I press the power button on the side of my screen, the computer doesn't even wake up anymore; it stays black.

I haven't had the issue since I posted this but I will surely try what you recommended up above next time it happens; in particular the waking with the hot keys. Question: you wrote up above as a step to "Attach the PSU, confirm the tip is lit". I am definitely not a computer geek, so I wasn't sure what that meant? I tried googling PSU, and all I get are images of some internal replacement part: Buy Replacement Power Supply Unit (PSU) for Surface Studio 2+ Repair - Microsoft Store

    Thanks!

    Hi cjs33139,

Certainly! The instruction "Attach the PSU, confirm the tip is lit" refers to a troubleshooting step for the Microsoft Surface device. Here's what it means in simpler terms:

Confirm the tip is lit: Once you've connected the charger to your Surface, there's a small light on the end of the charger's connector (the tip that plugs into the Surface). This light should turn on to indicate that the charger is properly connected and is supplying power to your Surface.

If the light on the charger's tip does not turn on, it suggests that there might be an issue with the charger (PSU) or the connection.

This step is part of a series of actions you can take if your Surface device is not turning on, to help determine if the problem is with the charger or the device itself.

    Your Sincerely

Ok noted that the "PSU" instruction does not relate to my situation because I have the Surface Studio 2 (Desktop Computer). I was a bit confused by the instructions.
