Onedrive App try to sync non-existing file (MacOS)

2025-10-21T06:05:41.0533333+00:00

In out enviroment we had a file with a huge filename, which caused problems when trying to sync.

The file is now deleted but my Onedrive keeps trying to sync the file, which result in an error because of the long filename and shut down Onedrive.

When I restart the app, the same thing happens. Since the app closes I cannot access the app settings, unless Im not logged in

I have tried:

Removing any extensions and permissions

Removing Onedrive startup

Deleting Onedrive app and re-installing

Re-sync Onedrive account with company folders

Removing all folder and files syncronised ,both locally and Online

Uninstall and manually delete related files I could find (some files in user/library/container dir) couldnt be deleted even with sudo priv ) .

Same process as above, but booted in safemode.

Deleting the entire path containing the file online (the file ownerchecked from his account - the file and folders are gone.)

Google

And of course talked to our sys-admin

I can get as far as re-install and open app. But as soon as I sign in, it begins to sync.

I suspect there is a file somewhere, which instruct Onedrive to sync with a certain set of folders and files, but where….?

    Hi Jakob,

Have you tried unlinking your Mac from OneDrive before signing in again? This can sometimes break the sync loop, especially if OneDrive is trying to reference a deleted or corrupted file.

Here’s a quick way to do it:

    1. Open OneDrive without signing in.
    2. Go to Help & Settings > Preferences > Account tab.
    3. Click Unlink this Mac.

Once unlinked, you can restart OneDrive and sign in again, ideally choosing a new sync folder location to avoid any cached references to the problematic file.

If the app crashes before you can access settings, we might need to reset OneDrive via Terminal or manually delete its configuration files.

    Hi Jakob Hirschsprung Christensen
Thank you for posting question to Microsoft Q&A Forum.
As this forum locale is da-dk, it is recommended that you post the thread in corresponding language (Danish). Please post the question in English forum next time if you would prefer English to be the main language.
According to this issue, may I know if you have this issue on only one Mac device with OneDrive application? Did you follow this article to perform a reset on OneDrive? https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/office/reset-onedrive-34701e00-bf7b-42db-b960-84905399050c#id0ebbh=mac
As Jeric mentioned above, please try to sync this on a completely different folder (not choosing the old folder for synchronization).
If we only have only one Mac device that has been affected by this issue, consider backing up the data then factory resetting Mac. (Please make sure that the data inside Mac has its own back up before going to this step).

Please let me know once you have changed the sync settings to a different folder. I am looking forward to that update.

    I got it to work...

    1. Removed the app
    2. Removed permissions in Mac Setup
    3. Deleting all files I could find related to Onedrive on my Mac (using terminal)
    4. Downloading Office installer and re-installed onedrive.
    5. Right-clicked and choose "unlinc from my Mac" a few times (it didn't respond so maybe it wasn't necessesary)
    6. Signed in
    7. Choose a Different installation directory

    Now it works!

    Thanks for the help :)
